I am a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Health Service Provider with a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Iowa (2020). During my training, I worked in college counseling centers, residential supportive housing for adults with a history of persistent and severe mental disorders, a VA outpatient clinic, and the UIHC Spine Center (a pain and rehabilitation clinic). Following graduation, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the UIowa Telepsychology Training Clinic, providing telepsychology services to rural Iowans.
I work primarily with adults using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a framework for therapy, which means I work alongside clients as they practice becoming more flexible in how they respond to difficult thoughts and feelings. From this approach, therapy can be focused on building skills for better awareness and self-regulation, exploring the stories we use to make sense of who we are and what we have experienced, and using the safe and non-judgmental space of therapy to explore parts of ourselves and experiences that we might otherwise avoid. I believe that who you are and what you value is vitally important in the work of therapy, and strive to approach differences with humility and openness.
I value the diversity clients bring to therapy, and strive to approach differences with humility and openness. I recognize harm caused by oppression and marginalization, and commit to the ongoing work of understanding the impact of my own biases and privilege.
I have expertise in working alongside people navigating life transitions such as grief and loss, job loss or shift, emerging health conditions or pain, identity exploration, and taking on a new role such as becoming a parent or retiring from full-time work. I also work with concerns such as stress management, anger, depression, anxiety, interpersonal and relationship concerns, and religious and spirituality concerns. I have personal experience and training in working with rural people and farmers.
In my spare time, exploring natural spaces with my family, coaxing food and beauty out of my backyard garden, making music and writing [imperfect] poetry keep me grounded.
